Write Op-Ed Pieces

Write a letters to the editor about civil liberties and human rights abuses in Miami and the Save Our Civil Liberties Campaign.

If possible, use a local angle. Your local newspaper will be more inclined to publish an essay by local authors. Write tight. The typical published op-ed is between 600 and 1200 words.

Here is a sample letter:

To the Editor:

How many reports of people who were unjustly gassed, harassed, beaten and arrested during the FTAA protests in Miami must we hear before we come to our senses and condemn this unprofessional police conduct? Do we still live in an America that recognizes the long celebrated right to protest policies like the FTAA that are bad for our families and our communities? Or do we want to count ourselves as just another country who let people with guns control when and where people can assemble or speak out? No one seems to think these things can happen here in (name of your city) or in the U.S., but there's no reason they can't — unless we take steps to prevent them.

America has a long history of organized dissent and protest leading to better lives for all people. The American Revolution, women's suffrage movement, the farm worker's movement, the labor movement and Civil Rights movement are all examples of people taking to the streets for human rights and social change. We've taken a step backward when armored police in tanks and helicopters take over our communities like they did in Miami.

I urge the Editorial Board of this paper and all the readers to contact our Mayor and elected officials and publicly condemn the so-called “Miami Model”. We need to act now; and numbers count. The more people that contact our elected representatives on this matter, the more likely we are to see that justice is truly served both here and in Miami.

Sincerely,

(Your name)
